This program recognizes all facilities that made strides in lowering utility-associated
carbon footprints within their buildings between 2021 and 2023.
The awards program required participants to demonstrate at least a 5% reduction in
carbon emissions from their facilities during the assessment period. Data submissions
were managed through the Carbon Awards App (https://www.ifhecarbonchallenge.com/),
which offers users tools such as dashboards and utilities for monitoring energy use and carbon reductions.
All qualifying facilities received recognition to honor their contributions toward a sustainable future.
78 facilities qualified for the 5% carbon reduction award. Explore the organizations that
achieved this result HERE.
Additionally, 159 facilities achieved energy consumption reductions exceeding 10% over
the same timeframe. These remarkable organizations can be found HERE.
IFHE also spotlighted the facilities and teams in each participating country that recorded
the highest validated carbon reductions. Awards were categorized into two
groups—hospitals and non-hospital healthcare facilities. The following facilities won the
best-in-country awards.
Canada:
Best-in-Country Canada non-Hospital: Holy Family Hospital
Best-in-Country Canada Hospital Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital
South Africa
Best-in-Country South Africa: Mediclinic Lephalale
(all South African entries qualified as hospitals)
United States
Best-in-Country United States non-Hospital: Kaiser Permanente Cerritos

Finally, the Best-in-World Award was awarded in the hospital and other healthcare facility categories:

To ensure these achievements inspire the wider global healthcare community, IFHE will
conduct interviews with all Best-in-Country and Best-in-World recipients. By sharing
their stories, innovative practices, and strategies, IFHE hopes to drive further
momentum in carbon reduction efforts globally.
The IFHE Global Carbon Challenge will return in 2026, with plans already underway to
make it even more impactful. If you have suggestions on how to enhance the program
or its reach, please feel free to share your ideas by emailing awards@IFHE.info.
